All about the Whale Watching & Bird Spotting.

Whale and Dolphin Watching

On our Whale & Dolphin Watching we use the same traditional methods to find whales and dolphins as it was used on the past for Whaling, since the XIX Century. This practice involves the use of a lookout (Vigia), a person who searches for whales and dolphins from a high point on land with a long-range binoculars and passes this information to our vessels by radio.

Then, we combine this ancient knowledge with our expertise on finding them from the boat and keeping them close in a safe and non-threatening way according to the Azorean conduct code to approaching cetaceans, aiming for a responsible Whale Watching.

Bird Spotting in the Cabras Islets

Due to the presence of protected seabirds like the Cory’s Shearwater, Common Tern and Roseate Tern, included on the Annex I of the Habitats Directive, Cabras Islet was classified as a Special Protection Area as well as their inclusion in the list of Important Bird Areas of the Azores, published by Birdlife International.

The Stingray Cave is a natural volcanic structure being part of the Cabras Islet, located on the north coast of the west islet and only accessible by boat, although is limited by the type of boat or sea conditions for the day. On summer season, occasionally we observe inside this cave the Eagle Stingray what originated its name.
